About us

A Mindful Yoga Studio is located in the Historic Times Building at 63 East Main Street in Westminster, Maryland (across from the old firehouse clock tower). The studio is on the second floor in Suite 7. The studio offers a variety of Yoga Asana classes that range in levels of challenge and specific intention, as well as Group Meditation weekly and Yoga Nidra Practice. Outdoor Yoga practice events are offered seasonally.

With over 25 years of collective teaching experience, it is the intention of the directors of the studio to offer these practices with integrity and authenticity in order to promote the fullest potential of each individual.  As the words of Yogi Joseph Lepage convey quite beautifully, “We can view the physical practices of Yoga as a drop of water falling into a pool. It begins with the physical asanas and expands outward as healing, concentric circles, bringing balance and harmony to body, mind, and spirit. This is the Yoga process.”

rahul ahuja

Rahul moved to the U.S. in 2001 from New Delhi, India. After studying at the University of Maryland, he has owned businesses, worked as a broker in New York, and consulted for a fitness startup company known as Endurance Leaders, based out of Atlanta, Georgia.

Rahul has been practicing yoga since 2009 and has benefited immensely from it. In 2015, he decided to advance his love for yoga, meditation, nutrition and kinesiology; he wanted to turn it from a passion into his career. Rahul traveled to Kerala and earned his yoga teacher certification from the Sivananda Yoga Institute of India (accredited by the International Yoga Alliance). Since returning to the United States in 2016, he has been teaching all over Maryland. Rahul is also co-owner of A Mindful Yoga Studio.

shawn essed

Shawn Essed (eRYT 200) has been teaching yoga since 2006.  She began practicing yoga out of curiosity and a fascination with the discipline and quickly came to love it for the feeling of solace it provided her.  Over the years the benefits grew:  stress relief, reduced knee and neck pain, and a softer personality, so that she no longer feels defensive or reactionary.  Besides practicing yoga at home, Shawn continues her learning as a yoga student and teacher by regularly attending classes, workshops and teacher trainings, as well as reading every good yoga book she gets her hands on.  Shawn believes in the power of breath, movement and focusing on the moment for the healing of the whole person, body, mind, emotions and spirit.  As a yoga teacher she offers her students a safe place to relax, unwind and grow in any or all of these areas.

emily watcher

Emily began practicing yoga as a way to integrate healthful and mindful practices into her daily life- she hopes to share the same with her students! Emily completed her 200 Hour Teacher Training and 85 Hour Prenatal Yoga Teacher Training through Charm City YogaWorks in 2015, and she is currently completing her 300 Hour Advanced Teacher Training. She loves making connections with students and hopes to help guide you on your way to cultivate a sense of ease, peace and calm in body, mind and spirit.

cindy jeng

Cindy found her way into yoga as way to improve her health after encountering some problems during her pregnancy in 2008.  She fell in love with yoga and has been a devoted practitioner ever since. She believes that as long as we can breathe, we can do yoga. Yoga is a way of living and it can start wherever we are in life. It is the path to self-discovery and self-awareness.

Yoga has influenced her in all aspects of life, not just physically, but mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Yoga has taught her to be present, mindful and grateful. She learned to embrace the moment she is in and appreciate every little thing that has been ignored or taken for granted before yoga found her. She came to realize that even the breath that she just took, that was a gift.

Cindy has completed her 200-hour Prana Vinyasa Flow RYT training as well as Yin Yoga teacher training. She is also a certified “LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA” instructor (a 12-week program for cancer survivors), a certified “BORN to MOVE” instructor by Les Mills and a certified group exercise instructor. She is constantly studying everything about yoga and believes in continuous training to help her become a better yoga teacher so she can serve her students with different body types and health issues.

New to Yoga?

This beginners’ information page is being presented to help you find the right class for you - wherever you are.  Now, please consider what you are looking for in a Yoga class and consider your current level of physical activity.  These are both important considerations.

  • If you want our gentlest yoga class, try “Restorative Yoga.”  The focus of this class is on keeping the joints mobile and very gently toning and lengthening the muscles while quieting the chatter in the mind.

  • Any class that says Gentle,” “Level 1orBeginner is suitable for most people.  These classes set a foundation to build strength, flexibility and balance.  Many students stick with these classes for years as the teachers offer ways to increase or decrease the challenge based on the students’ needs.

  • Classes that use the words FloworVinyasa in their description will have students moving through postures.  These classes are fine for active beginners.  There will be a degree of physical challenge, but always grounded in the principle of moving with care and consideration for the body and the breath.

  • Integrative Yoga and any classes that say Level 2”, “Mixed Level or Intermediate will be suitable for people with some Yoga experience.  These classes will help students deepen their practice with introspection and a greater awareness of the breath and body together.

  • Our Contemplative Practices are for everyone.  There is often a mix of those brand new to meditation and those who’ve practiced for years.  We come together to support and learn from each other. We hope that you’ll feel comfortable to join us!

We do our best to remain true to our studio name.  Our focus is on offering everyone a chance to step into a space that is supportive and nurturing.  Our teachers want to help each student feel better in their bodies and explore their own unique potential.

To really discover what Yoga has to offer you, we recommend trying several different classes at a pace that’s right for you.  Many people spend most of the first class trying to figure out where to put their hands and feet!  A great way to begin is to purchase our 6 class card.  It’s good for 2 months and can be used for any classes on our regular Yoga Class Schedule.  Yoga is not one size fits all. Give us a try, feel free to speak with your teacher, and feel free to explore the same class or others.

Welcome to AMYS!
